A group of human rights activists, along with Afghan and Spanish citizens, staged a protest outside the European Parliament office in Madrid, the capital of Spain, calling on European institutions to cease any actions that could legitimize the Taliban.
The demonstrators gathered on Thursday, June 4, carrying banners and chanting slogans in support of Afghan women. They expressed strong opposition to any invitation, hosting, or official engagement between European institutions and the Taliban.
Participants argued that such interactions amount to granting legitimacy to a group they hold responsible for widespread human rights violations and the systematic oppression of women in Afghanistan.
In a resolution read during the protest, the demonstrators stated that the Taliban have turned Afghanistan into a “vast prison for women” over the past four years through a series of restrictive policies and bans.
The resolution also urged the international community to prioritize support for victims rather than engagement with the Taliban, and to intensify efforts to hold perpetrators of human rights abuses accountable and to end what protesters described as gender apartheid in Afghanistan.
In recent months, growing diplomatic contacts and discussions between some countries, international organizations, and the Taliban have repeatedly drawn criticism from human rights advocates and women’s rights groups.
Activists have consistently warned that any engagement lacking accountability and justice risks normalizing repression and ignoring the suffering of millions of Afghan women and girls.
