A group of Afghan women protesters, civil society activists, and human rights defenders residing in Norway held a demonstration today to strongly condemn the Taliban's recent measures aimed at facilitating and recognizing marriages involving underage girls.
Participants in the rally warned that the normalization of child marriage would increase the risk of abuse, deprive girls of their right to education, and further entrench cycles of violence and discrimination against women in Afghanistan. They stressed that such policies threaten the future and well-being of thousands of Afghan girls.
The demonstrators called on the Norwegian government and the international community to break their silence and take a firm stance against what they described as serious violations of human rights. They urged governments and international organizations to intensify diplomatic and legal pressure on the Taliban.
Speakers at the gathering emphasized that denying girls access to education while forcing them into early marriage constitutes a grave violation of fundamental human rights. They argued that these practices should be recognized internationally as a form of gender apartheid and addressed through relevant international legal mechanisms.
The activists concluded by reaffirming their commitment to continuing advocacy efforts in defense of the rights of Afghan women and girls and called for stronger international support for those affected by the Taliban's restrictive policies.
