A former Afghanistan female detainee has rejected claims by Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid that torture does not occur in Taliban-run prisons, alleging that the group’s detention centers have become hubs of oppression, fear, and violence.
In an audio message, the woman said that abuse, mistreatment, and harsh treatment of prisoners are widespread in Taliban detention facilities. She claimed that her brother was summoned to a local security office some time ago despite having committed no crime and was subsequently subjected to torture.
According to her account, her brother was beaten so severely during detention that, upon his release, he was unable to sit or stand without difficulty. She further alleged that Taliban officials admitted his detention had been a mistake when releasing him and then asked him to act as an informant within the community.
The allegations come after Mujahid dismissed reports of torture and abuse in Taliban detention centers, insisting that the mistreatment of prisoners is prohibited under the group’s principles.
However, international human rights organizations have repeatedly raised concerns in recent years over the treatment of detainees and prison conditions in Afghanistan, citing allegations of abuse and violations of fundamental rights.
