A group of Afghan women’s rights activists living in exile staged a protest on Sunday, May 31, to voice their opposition to child marriage and advocate for the rights of Afghan children.
The activists emphasized the importance of education, personal development, and a secure future for children, calling for greater access to educational opportunities for both girls and boys across Afghanistan.
They stressed that children belong in schools and learning environments, where they can develop their skills and pursue their aspirations, rather than being forced into marriage at an early age.
Chanting slogans such as “No to Child Marriage,” the demonstrators warned that early marriage can have far-reaching consequences for children's health, education, and future prospects, while depriving them of their fundamental rights.
During the protest, participants displayed books, pens, school bags, and other educational materials as symbols of every child's right to education and learning.
The activists also urged international organizations and human rights advocates to take stronger and more effective measures to prevent child marriage and protect the educational rights of Afghan children.
The demonstration comes amid repeated warnings from human rights organizations about the growing risk of child marriage in Afghanistan and renewed calls for the protection of children's rights and access to education.
