The British newspaper Daily Mail has reported a rise in cases of child sexual exploitation and the practice known as “Bacha Bazi” in Afghanistan, alleging that influential figures and some local power brokers are linked to the phenomenon.
According to the report, impoverished and vulnerable children are often lured or coerced into the cycle of abuse, where they are allegedly exploited at gatherings organized by powerful individuals.
The report states that victims frequently endure violence and mistreatment during these incidents and are left to cope with severe psychological, social, and physical consequences afterward.
It further notes that reductions in international aid have significantly limited access to medical care, rehabilitation services, and support programs for survivors.
According to Daily Mail, the practice of Bacha Bazi has deep historical roots in Afghanistan, dating back centuries. However, the report argues that the phenomenon has resurfaced and expanded during recent decades, particularly in the aftermath of prolonged conflicts.
The newspaper also claims that the practice regained influence within certain power structures after 2001 and, in some instances, continued under the protection of local commanders and influential figures.
The report adds that although some groups had previously declared the practice illegal and sought to curb it, political changes in recent years have allegedly contributed to its re-emergence in certain parts of the country.
