Kevin Cornwell, a British aid worker and former military medic, has disclosed details of his 272-day detention in Afghanistan, describing what he says were harsh conditions and mistreatment while in Taliban custody.
According to Cornwell, he was subjected to solitary confinement, threats, physical assaults, and other forms of abuse during his imprisonment. He also claimed that personal belongings, including approximately $12,000 in cash, were confiscated.
Cornwell said he was arrested while working with the United Nations in Kabul and was questioned over allegations related to espionage and planning attacks, accusations he denies.
He further stated that investigators pressured him to make forced confessions and to read prepared statements that he described as false.
According to his account, he was repeatedly beaten during his detention, while inadequate access to medical treatment significantly worsened his health condition.
Cornwell also claimed that his release, along with that of several other British nationals, came after negotiations and financial arrangements involving the parties concerned.
He said the experience left him with serious physical and psychological consequences and that he required multiple medical procedures following his release.
Reports of foreign nationals being detained in Afghanistan and prisoner exchanges involving various parties have surfaced on several occasions in recent years.
Meanwhile, Taliban authorities have consistently rejected allegations of mistreatment in detention facilities and maintain that detainees are treated in accordance with their laws and regulations.
