Women’s rights activists in Afghanistan have strongly condemned the Taliban’s newly issued regulations on child marriage, calling for an immediate halt to such practices across the country.
The Network for the Support of Women and the United Women’s Movement for Freedom stated in a joint declaration that the policy further restricts the rights and freedoms of Afghan girls and effectively creates conditions that enable child marriage.
These organizations described child marriage as a clear violation of children’s rights and a harmful practice that endangers the future of girls in Afghanistan.
The women’s rights groups have urged the United Nations, international human rights organizations, and global governments to respond to this policy and take a firm stand against it.
They emphasized that the international community must not remain silent in the face of what they describe as a serious violation of girls’ rights, and called for concrete actions to protect the rights of women and children.
The Taliban’s ongoing restrictions on women and girls in education, employment, and social life have faced widespread criticism from human rights organizations and women’s rights activists in recent years.
