Three Women’s Movements Call for an End to the Exclusion of Female Medical Professionals

Three Afghan women’s movements—the Afghanistan Women’s Movement for Equality, the Afghanistan Women’s Solidarity Movement, and the Spontaneous Women’s Movement of Afghanistan—have expressed concern over restrictions imposed on women in the country’s healthcare sector.

In a joint statement, the groups said that the requirement for a male guardian (mahram) for women to work and the continued closure of medical education institutions for women have left Afghanistan’s healthcare system facing a severe shortage of female medical personnel.

The statement said that the mahram requirement and the ban on women’s medical education have prevented thousands of female doctors, midwives, and other healthcare workers from practicing, placing Afghanistan’s healthcare system at serious risk.

The movements called on the international community to ensure women’s rights to work, education, and access to healthcare services, and urged immediate action to prevent the continued exclusion of female doctors and healthcare professionals.The statement comes as international organizations have repeatedly warned that the Taliban’s restrictions on women are undermining Afghanistan’s healthcare system and increasing the risk of maternal deaths across the country.
