Foreign Fighters in Panjshir: Al-Qaeda Members Reportedly Seen in Masoud’s House and Abshar

Credible sources in Panjshir province say members of the Al-Qaeda network, mostly Arabs, are actively present in several parts of the province.

The sources told Sani News Agency that a number of these individuals have reportedly been stationed at the private residence of Ahmad Shah Massoud in the Jangalak area of Panjshir’s provincial capital.

They added that Arabic-speaking individuals are also present in Paranda, near the border with Andarab district of Baghlan province, and are secretly moving between parts of Panjshir and areas bordering Baghlan.

According to the sources, members of the group have also been seen in Abshar district of Panjshir and in the village of Jir Ali, accompanied by their families and children.

The sources claimed that these individuals have a distinctive appearance and clothing. They reportedly dye their beards and can be distinguished from Taliban fighters based on their clothing and physical appearance.

They further alleged that the individuals are living secretly with their wives and children and maintain limited contact with local residents.

In addition, the sources said members of the network are also present in Nahrin district and other parts of Baghlan, using these areas as routes for movement between Baghlan and Panjshir.

The sources also alleged that Mohammad Agha Hakim, the current Taliban governor of Panjshir, was among individuals trusted by Osama bin Laden and is close to Al-Qaeda, describing him as a link between the Taliban and the network.

Previous reports have also alleged the presence of Al-Qaeda members and foreign fighters in parts of Panjshir and Baghlan.

One report published in previous years, citing security sources, claimed that individuals affiliated with Al-Qaeda had been relocated to Nahrin and several other areas of Baghlan.

A United Nations Security Council report, which was also covered by the media, has previously documented Al-Qaeda’s activities in Afghanistan and reported the existence of an Al-Qaeda weapons depot in Panjshir.
